"By Faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country;"
This is the story of one of the participants in the great Hall of Faith, Hebrews 11. Abraham was given a covenant promise by God in Genesis 12:1-3. God promised to make him into a gerat nation and that all the people of the eaerth would be blessed by him. Sounda great, doesnt"t it? After all, who wouldnt want their descendants to be as numerous as the dust of the earth? (Genesis 13:16). But before this could happen, God needed Abraham to make a major change in his life. He had to leave his country, his people, and his family in Haran and go to Canaan. He was 75 years old. No matter what culture yo come from, at that age you probably do not like changes, especially drastic ones, like leaving your country home. But Abraham obeyad and went. He settled in the very land where his descendants would occupy, nearly 65o years later. There was just one small problem -- he and Sarai, his wife, his wife, had no children and that owuld not happen for another 25 years! Can you imagine living through something like this? I am sure there were times when he though God forgot about the covenant promise. Ladies, can you hear Sarai saying, "Abraham, are you sure you heard God correctly?"
As time when ton, Abraham begasn to deepen his realtionship with the Lord and realized that God's ways are not like himan ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). But even thouh God is incomprehensible (Isaiah 40:13-14) He is knowable (Job 26:14). Abraham followed and obeayed His Lord even though he was asked to be extreamely patiened. He never did see his numerous descendants, bue he believved God was faithful. God fulfilled the promisese He made to Abraham, even though the happened centuries later.
I truly belive Hebrews chapter 11 was inspired for us, so that we belivers today could be encouraged and follow in Abraham's faith walk. The only reason we are living on this earth is to serve and honor our God. Here at Cornerstone Church, God is moving in mighty ways. We have seen population growth in our church in the last few years, but there are so many more people we could reach with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. According to the census bureau, Beaufort County ranked 13th in the country in population growth.* Would't it be wonderful if those people made Cornerstone Bluffton their church home? That's what this campaign is all about - people. We may not get to know everyone who comes to our church, and we may never know how many may come to know Jesus as their Savior, but like Abraham, we can obey and give back to God who has been so good and faithful to us!
