Unafraid Day Sixteen
Hebrews 11 Devotional
In Hebrews 11, there are a lot of “Spiritual Giants” mentioned. I think about the incredible men of God that Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and so many others mentioned were, and I immediately think that I could never measure up to some of the things that these guys did. But, if our mindset is on what the men and women in Hebrews 11 did, we are totally missing the point. Each time the writer of Hebrews tells of these men and women, he begins with two simple yet powerful words, “By faith.” By faith, these men and women were able to accomplish miraculous things and by faith we can do the same.
A little over a year ago, I felt God calling me into full-time ministry. I had been leading a volunteer student ministry for about 3 years and I was not sure where this call would lead my family to. But, by faith Lindsay and I put our house on the market, informed both of our jobs that we would not return, and began seeking God for direction. We were planning to stay with my in-laws for a period of time, but we had no jobs lined up and we weren’t sure how long that “stay” would be.
On our last night at our house in Maryland, I received a phone call from Pastor Mark inviting Lindsay and I to spend a long weekend in Bluffton. I wasn’t offered the job that night, but God reminded me of His Word in Phillipians 4:6 where He says, 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (NIV).
God knew that serving young people was Lindsay and I’s desire. We knew that we would probably be moving far away from our family with our first child on the way, but by faith our desire to serve students was greater than the desire to live close to family. By faith, God called us here to Bluffton. By faith, He has provided for us every step of the way and by faith, He will continue to do so. There will be challenges and obstacles in your life, but by faith, God will overcome them. And by faith, God will do a mighty work through you.
